Who are you?
Hi there, I'm Sammy Murphy, and I'm thrilled to be leading TOSH's Creative Start-Up Programme for 2023. As the director of the design agency Studio Glass and the founder of the local magazine Pier Journal, my passion for creativity runs deep. With over a decade of experience in the design industry, I've had the privilege of working with renowned brands such as The Times, BBC Music, Native Land, Hammerson, Yo! Sushi and Barclays.
Moving away from London to the South Coast was a life-changing decision, and it has allowed me to become an active and steady figure in the vibrant creative community here. Collaboration with fellow creatives is my driving force, and I thoroughly enjoy bringing new ideas to life through my design work.
Why do you want to lead the Start Up Programme?
The opportunity to lead the Start-Up Programme came knocking at the perfect time. Over the years, people have reached out to me for portfolio reviews and creative advice, and I've always felt honoured by their trust in my expertise. When TOSH approached me with the chance to guide and support a whole group of creative minds for a few hours every week, I knew it was the perfect fit.
Bringing people together and hosting creative talks has become a cherished pastime of mine. Witnessing the magic that happens when like-minded individuals share their experiences and ideas brings me great joy. I genuinely believe in the power of constructive feedback and am eager to be a good listener and guide for each participant on their unique creative journey. The opportunity to connect with fellow artists and enthusiasts, sharing our passion for craftsmanship and creativity, is an experience I treasure.
What experience do you think you'll be using during the course?
Throughout my ten years in the design industry, I've learned to be a multidisciplinary designer, honing various skills such as art direction, advertising, brand identity, web design, marketing, project management, exhibitions, photoshoots and account direction, among others. I'm excited to harness this diverse skill set and share my knowledge with the creative community.
Beyond my professional expertise, I'm also embarking on a new venture with my partner Chris—a design studio that stems from the success of Pier Journal. This experience allows me to understand the challenges and rewards of starting a creative business from scratch, and I'm eager to channel this insight during the course.
What are you most excited about?
What excites me the most about the Start-Up Programme is the opportunity to meet a group of passionate and talented creatives. Hearing about their own creative businesses and witnessing the wealth of talent they bring to the table is incredibly inspiring. I find great fulfilment in helping others achieve their goals and aspirations, and I believe that together, we can form a fantastic team that supports and encourages each other on our creative journeys.
I'm eagerly looking forward to sharing knowledge, building connections and fostering a nurturing environment for creativity to flourish. Let's embark on this exciting journey together and unleash your creative potential with TOSH's Creative Start-Up Programme 2023!
